Caught Brave (2012) by Disney and Pixar today at Tropicana City Mall. It was really quite lovely.
I have to say, I like this new trend of Disney "princesses" who kick ass and save the day all on their own (or, at least, for the most part). This show had a pretty nice plot line too, and good character growth. Merida obviously changed significantly throughout the movie and her mum got a little slab of Wild Things stuck in her at the end.
Ironically, or maybe not so much, the show focused a lot on Merida's relationship with her mum. And I went to watch the show with my mum. And the only other people in the entire cinema were two ladies sitting directly in front of us, who were mother and daughter. I feel like doing an xxxHolic thing and muttering hitsuzen under my breath when I think about it.
Funny thing is, I didn't even know about the plot line when I decided to watch it. I just saw Pixar and Disney and pounced. (Yes, branding obviously works for those two companies.)
The short Pixar film at the beginning of the movie was really nice too. I wonder if they chose it specifically for the fact that it fit the overall theme of Brave rather well. A young lad with his father and grandfather, learning the family trade of clearing up the moon and finding his own voice in the mix. It was very sweet.
Brave's theme of sticking with a genuine Scottish voice actor cast was brilliant. I know they deliberately left the Scottish bits Scottish (according to interviews anyway), but I rather wish I could understand what the heck young MacGuffin was saying in his Doric dialect.
The humour was at times really ridiculous but somehow, I rather liked it. It was very charming, and painted an idyllic sort of Scottish setting.
I think I would rather like to get a copy of the movie when it comes out. And perhaps the soundtrack too. I wouldn't call it the best I've heard, but it's something I imagine I would enjoy listening too during off peak periods.
